Faculty of Agrotechnology, University College of Yayasan Pahang (UCYP) in collaboration with Malaysian Soil Sciences Society (MSSS) have organized a Tree Planting Program at UCYP Main Campus, Tanjung Lumpur, Kuantan on 4 December 2020 (Friday).
The program themed “Green Campus for Sustainable Biodiversity” aims to green the UCYP Main Campus area, provide awareness to the community about the importance of biodiversity, sustainability, transfer knowledge about soil fertility and establish friendly relations between faculty, UCYP staff and external agencies. Among the other objectives of organizing this program is to celebrate World Soil Day 2020 themed “Keep Soil Alive, Protect Soil Biodiversity”.
This program involves a total of 31 staff from IKIP Workers Club (KWKI) and 9 students from Young Planters Society (YPS). This program has the support from Food and Agriculture Organizations of the United Nations and The Global Soil Partnership as well as good cooperation from the Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK).
Among the activities carried out during the program were sharing session on the importance of biodiversity sustainability with Dr Rosazlin Abdullah as the President of the Malaysian Soil Sciences Society (MSSS) and the planting of 137 landscape trees around the Main Campus consisting of species Loropetalum Chinense, Durantha Erecta, Syzygium Campanulatum and Pisonia Alba. The Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) was also present during the planting of landscape trees.
In addition, a sharing session with Dr Mohd Nozulaidi, lecturer at Faculty of Agrotechnology on an introduction to fertilizers, hydroponic systems, how to sow seeds, demonstrations of Biopesticide manufacturing for insect and fungal control and how to make Bokashi fertilizer using kitchen waste was also held during the program.
Program Director, Ms. Zahidah Ab Razak informed that this program was held to celebrate the World Soil Day 2020 and provided exposure to participants on the importance of preserving biodiversity sustainability. In addition, the organization of this program is also to promote the field of expertise available in the Faculty of Agrotechnology.
A collaborative partner from the Malaysia Soil Science Society, Dr Rosazlin Abdullah also shared on the importance of healthy soil for biodiversity sustainability and Sustainable Development Goals (zero hunger and no poverty) that need to be emphasized to ensure food safety.
Before the program ends, participants have the opportunity to harvest and take home the vegetables that available in the Urban Garden plot.
